The Identity of God's Soul

Jesus is the Word of God. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. What about the Father?

We don’t really hear or read much about the soul of God. But it is true that He has one. God says it Himself in several verses. Here’s a few:

"Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations" Isaiah 42:1
"Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this" Jeremiah 5:9 KJV
"I will rejoice over them to do them good and will faithfully plant them in this land with all My heart and with all My soul" Jeremiah 32:41

God in Three Persons

We know that God has a spirit, which is the Holy Spirit. And that God has a body, which is Jesus Christ. But what about His soul? Who is the soul? Well, the soul has to be the Father. John in 1 John 5:7 KJV tells us, “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one”. Jesus Himself also says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit” Matthew 28:19. These three in one are called God. But as we see they have their own names, “identities”, and “roles” that they play in humanity.

The Soul of God is God the Father

The soul of God is, of course, the mind and the heart of God. He was in the beginning with the Word and the Holy Spirit during the creation of this world. The Word of God could not speak unless the Mind of God first thought. Just like the Spirit of God could not put forth the action of the commands in Genesis 1 unless the Word spoke (learn more here). This is why Jesus tells us, “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone” Matthew 24:36. Jesus doesn’t even know the hour when He shall return but He says, “I and the Father are one” John 10:30. Jesus is the Word of God, not the Mind of God. So, the Word of God doesn’t know anything until the Mind of God is ready to speak. The Mind of God knows all things, but the Word of God only knows the thoughts of God when He is ready to speak.

God has Wisdom, Emotions, and Personality

God has wisdom, emotions, and personality. From the website Gotquestions.com it explains, “In theological circles, personhood is often defined as ‘the state of being an individual with intellect, emotion, and volition.’ God, then, is a ‘person’ in that He is a personal God with a mind, emotions, and a will of His own. To deny God’s emotions is to deny that He possesses personality”. All His wisdom, emotions, and personality come from the Soul of God. Just like all our wisdom, emotions, and personality come from our soul. But we must know that our soul is not like His because He is our Father and we are His children. The children are not the father but are descendants of him. It is the same with God and His children, we are not God but offspring of Him. When Jesus was about to be stoned by the Jews for blasphemy in John 10:30-39, He went back and quoted part of Psalm 82:6 which says, “I said, ‘You are gods, and all of you are sons of the Most High’”. We are God’s sons because God named us Man in the day that we were created (see Genesis 5:1). He calls us gods because we are His children and He is God. Just like I am a Knight because my father is a Knight.

God's Spiritual Children

John 4:24 says to us that “God is spirit”. Therefore, if God is a spiritual being, that means He created us as spiritual beings as well in Genesis 1. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:44, “if there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body”. In 2 Corinthians 5:1 he also tells us, “For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens”. Our spiritual body that our natural body holds is the soul (learn more here). Genesis 1:27 tells us that God created us in His own image. Well, if we are created in God’s image then that means He made us spiritual because He is spirit. Then the same verse goes on to say, “in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them”. The Bible is telling us that God is both male and female. Male and female is the image of God. And because we know “God is spirit”, He was not speaking of the male and female physical body. He was speaking of our spiritual body, our soul (learn more here and here). Our soul is both male and female, which means God’s soul is both male and female. We are His children and we look like our Father. Our Heavenly Father is male and female, therefore, so are His spiritual children male and female.

God is Both Male and Female

The Soul, Heart, and Mind of God is both male and female. It can be read throughout the whole Old and New Testament. These two articles (here and here) that I’ve read shows the male and female attributes of God in the Bible. Showing us that God is both Father and Mother to His children, but He refers to Himself primarily as Father though He is both.

Here are excerpts from both articles:

"In fact, the personal name of God, Yahweh, which is revealed to Moses in Exodus 3, is a remarkable combination of both female and male grammatical endings. The first part of God’s name in Hebrew, 'Yah,' is feminine, and the last part, 'weh,' is masculine."
"God loves and protects like a father. And He loves and protects like a mother. And because all of us, however we may identify, are created in His image, our identity is found not in a gender label but in having our sin forgiven, our brokenness healed, and our relationship with God restored. Why isn’t God female? As my teacher said, 'He is.'"

Because God is both male and female, we must know that we are both male and female. With understanding this we can begin to understand why the Church is referred to as “her”. Ephesians 5:7, “that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless”. 2 Corinthians 11:2, “For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin”. The Church is not just women, but the Church is men as well. But because men and women are both male and female spiritually, this is why the Bible presents us (Man or Mankind) as the bride of Christ.

Conclusion

God’s male and female Soul created our male and female soul, which makes sense because here in the natural only male and female, when the two come together as ‘one flesh’, can reproduce. It makes sense but can be hard to grasp and understand because we understand God to just be God with no "gender" or just male. But at the same time, God shows Himself in the Bible to be male and female, both Father and Mother. So, if the Bible presents Him this way, why can’t we acknowledge and come to the understanding that we too are both male and female? Putting down social constructs of what it means to be a male and female and studying the divine nature of our Father who expresses Himself as both male and female. Embracing the fact, we are all made in His image and His image is male and female.

I'll leave you with two thoughts:

How could God make both male and female unless He is both male and female?

Why would God make both male and female if He is only male?
